During my time living overseas I acquired fandom for teams in the Mexican and Argentine futbol leagues. Haven’t seen either play in over 20 years, not even on the tube. When I chance upon a score from their games, I am still bitter if they are on the losing end.
That is considered poor form in that part of the world. Changing affiliations is very difficult for fans. Not for players (who move around a lot), but definitely for fans.
Who said, "Fandom is supposed to be fun?" That would never explain the existential dread that supporters of the Arsenal live through.

Could you root for your team in Championship and then pick another for Premier?

Not so much changing as adding. In the manner I rooted for the Angels to win the 2002 World Series. I even bought the DVD!
If Everton were not in the Championship, my Premier League fandom would be "rooting for the team playing Liverpool" every week.
